Martin Turp

Biography

Martin Turp BSc. MEd.

Nearly all the artwork I create relates to my life, most of it as part of my recovery from a range of problems. I drew a little and did art for many years only as part of my job as a teacher. I did not start creating for myself until all the problems I was having became too much and I attempted suicide.

In the hospital my wife brought me a pencil and paper and then I started to draw. I found that by doing this and facing my problems I felt better. It also gave something towards helping the ones I love and my Doctors gain understanding of the things going on in my head. Childhood sexual abuse, childhood diabetes, long term depression, Schizoid tendencies, fantasist, self hate and loathing leading to lack of diabetes management leading to many severe complications effecting nerves and eyesight. All of this fuels my art work and I hold it all at bay by using it to power my creativity.

I am now volunteering at a local charity where we attempt to use creative activity to help those with mental health issues. I am a great believer in the power of creativity to aid recovery from any life disabling event.

The paintings and drawings that you make are quite different. The blues and greens, reds and oranges that you paint with are combined in an unusual way. The effects that you have achieved could be described as 'op-graphic'.
