Sophie Adams

I am fascinated by the sublimated and repressed in lived and dreamt experience. Ideas that I use in my works include aspects of the erotic- though these themes are infused with a wry humour. I am a figurative painter and I mainly paint from my imagination to create compositions, however I use reference material from life as well as from my drawings and magazine imagery. In my paintings, shapes and faces appear in a stream of consciousness, I then rub out and rework over the surface sometimes many times. This process creates a history to the surface in texture as well as forms and faces coexisting on the canvas from previous incarnations of the painting. I am inspired by the poems of Arthur Rimbaud and Federico Garcia Lorca as their work is deeply sensual. R.B Kitaj and Paula Rego are influences for disparate reasons; Kitaj for his integration of drawn apsects in his paintings and Rego for her subjects.

Love the way the wind blows painterly style and dream-like imagery, how sharpness and blur interweave, intriguing subject, and interpreting potential connections.. Good work!
