Rubbena’s works are an exploration through the layers of colour and texture into the depths of culture. Influenced by comparisons of Eastern and Western ways of being, her work represents conflicting paths; Asian culture, deafness and misunderstanding and more liberal attitudes to women. The work reflects the way we live today. Rubbena creates paintings and installations. In her paintings are interwoven narratives of language and culture, concealing and constricting the lives of women, deep within the threads of the canvas. The work encourages the viewer to seek the hidden nuances of culture, difference and behaviour. The installations are products of the power of women gaining freedom of expression, projecting tales of witnessing, listening and re-telling experiences with an energy driven by a sense of cultures that enmesh belonging and alienation. Allowing the viewer to walk directly into this complex lattice of pride and shame, the installations stand as monuments to otherwise unheard memories.

You have a minimalist approach to painting with colour that makes your work a pleasure to look at. I interpret pieces like "Sunset" as the pure enjoyment of painting oil on canvas. The installantion work that you do is full of meaning. You have worked very hard at art and are a great representative of your gender.
