Training Opportunities
Step Up Training Programme
Step Up: Phase 3
Step Up has become an integral part of Outside In, enabling the project to broaden its offer for marginalised artists. Step Up provides professional development opportunities in a range of art-aligned skills, including e.g. curating, facilitating workshops and research. Step Up also enables the study and dissemination of subjects related to Outsider and marginalised art. The success of the pilot project in 2009 has enabled Step Up to draw in
additional funds to support the development of the programme.
The Step Up: Phase 3 training programme has just been completed with twenty-two adults now being able to run workshops. This demonstrates a positive incremental growth from six participants in Step Up: Phase 1 and fifteen in Step
Up: Phase 2. Mandie Saw and Jacqui Cavalier delivered a series of twelve half-day workshops to this new cohort of Step Up trainees in September 2011. During the programme participants once again experienced training in a wide range of facilitation
skills, prior to delivering Step Up workshops as part of Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme (Autumn 2011).
Revisiting Collections:
The Step Up programme has drawn in additional funding from Accentuate, through its Revisiting Collections programme. This will enable several of the Step Up artists to work with Julia Elmore, a freelance curator of outsider art and contributor to Raw Vision (a key international journal for outsider and visionary art), to explore the Gallery’s collection. Starting from their position as marginalised artists, the artists will carry out research into the collection, led by their own interests. This will be both presented as an addition to the existing Step Up workshop packs, a tour or trail in the Gallery and imbedded in the Gallery’s database. This is
a key piece of work that further embeds Outside In into the Gallery and allows alternative voices to be heard in the interpretation of the Gallery’s collection.
Step Up: Phase 3 Trainee:
“I’ve found Step Up very interesting. I’ve enjoyed the different forms of art, the different ways of doing art as well. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people too, learning their different interests in art. It shows you how much more you can do with art. Things you never knew
you could do. Things you’ve never done before. Gives you more ideas really. Gives you confidence as well. Boosts your confidence! So yes, it’s been really interesting, good fun as
well. I’ve met some lovely people here too. You get ideas from other people, other people learn from you. So yes, it’s good! It’s brilliant really. I’m working with Karen and Michelle
over there. I’m excited, bit nervous too, but it’s good. It’s worth it, because it’s how you feel afterwards, isn’t it? After you’ve done it, actually doing it is a big achievement.”
Plans are already underway with what will happen for Step Up: Phase 4 - Watch this space!
